Description |
Sea Ranch mailbox door inset into a weathered wood box lined in velvet. The door is from The Sea Ranch mailbox of Larry and Anna Halprin. On the inside of the copper door are etched the words "Sea Ranch Post Office, Ca. 1976." The word "The" may possibly precede the words "Sea Ranch" but is obscured by corrosion. These mailboxes were possibly replaced by the Lodge in 1976, or slightly earlier. Jerry Erickson, local Sea Ranch artist, acquired the old PO boxes. In 1981/82, Erickson designed decorative wood boxes to go with the old PO box doors. This box is presumably one of those boxes. In 2006, Larry Halprin donated the wood box with PO box door to Maynard and Lu Lyndon. Maynard and Lu Lyndon donated the box to the Archives on October 1, 2016, during the Archives Open House. Included with the box was a slip of paper documenting their receipt of the box from Larry Halprin. Text of the descriptive note from the Lyndons (also viewable as attached image 3 of 5, and Larry Halprin's Sea Ranch post office box door. This post office mailbox door was given to us by Larry Halprin in 2006. Although we may mis-remember some of the details exactly, at the time, Larry said it was his and Anna's mailbox at The Sea Ranch in the early years-before the current post office (at the Sea Ranch Lodge) changed and the present mailboxes were installed. (Maybe someone knows when that was?) In 2006 when we were helping Larry go through his drawings and artifacts in his Sea Ranch studio-making our selections with him and Anna for our gallery* Show of his work-Larry gave us this mailbox door as part of our honoring his work at The Sea Ranch. *The gallery was at our Placewares, in Gualala; we sold the store and gallery in January 2016. Larry recalled that it had been presented to him-by whom he couldn't remember-as a thank you and remembrance for all his work for Sea Ranch in those early years. (He also didn't recall who had made the box which houses the mailbox door.) We have enjoyed displaying it in our Sea Ranch home these past 10 years, but would now like to present it to the Archives Committee. (September 2016) (Perhaps other early Sea Ranchers will know or recall the circumstances of it having been presented to Larry, and perhaps who made this box it sits upon; we, sadly, do not know the details.)
