Notes |
In Glencoe, we had a woods across the small 5-house street and a woods on one side and awonderful Scotch family of boys on the other side. Climbing trees, building forts was natural, as was swimming to the raft (6 blocks from Lake Michigan), biking the Skokie Marsh, ice skating, etc. Sunday was the day for exploring: new houses, new puppies, the small airport, museums, The Art Institute, etc. I have always felt at home any place in the world and have traveled enough to be reassured: Borneo, Seychelies, Alaska, Russia, the Deep South, the ocean, rivers, lakes, etc. It was such a treat to have all of the commons at The Sea Ranch to explore, and I found things that now no longer exist: evidence of shingle making in the forest, a precious tiny shrine in a redwood, a driftwood fort on the beach, and how cold the Gualala River can be when your canoe swamps in March! A peak experience was hiking seven counties continuously on the California Coastal Trail. It is a sadness to me that for one day in the summer we cannot welcome coast walkers on our coast trail. They have to walk that Highway - yuk! I slept in the Fort Ross Chapel. The other sadness for me is that more and more people arrive to build large ____ to keep them from the landscape -- picnics in the ravine? No! Cocktail parties inside! Walks on Gualala Point in a wind/rain storm? No. TV inside! Moonlight sleep on the deck? No, snug in bed instead. Small is beautiful. I have small insides (600 square feet) and enormous outsides. I feel surrounded by Welcome! (She also says to see scrapbook in office.) |
