Notes |
"I was attracted to TSR because of its rugged beauty--where else can one enjoy such a scenic variety, from the fabulous coastline to the redwood forests; the original development plan laid out by Larry Halprin; the foresight of Obie Bowman, who saw what could be done with this unique site and convinced Dole to buy it and develop it; the members, who share a common interest in the place; and Reverdy Johnson, who created the workable CC&Rs." |
Occupation |
Research Engineer and senior manager (Associate Director for Aerophysics) for NASA Ames Research Center in Mt. View for 35 years; retired in 1990. TSR activities: Served on a Governance Committee, ~1986; Served on the original Planning Committee before and after it became a standing committee; Elected to the Board of Directors in 1989 and served for 7 years. (It's an odd number because the length of term was changed in the middle of his tenure.) During his tenure, the TSRA Board of Directors took action to terminate use of the old Activities Center and to build a new meeting hall; settled lawsuit against the developer, who agreed to built a secondary water source; negotiated an agreement with Sea Ranch Village, Inc. (SRVI) regarding the golf course and the Lodge property that SRVI then owned. The agreement gave TSRA control over use of these properties by SRVI and its successors. John Lundell took the lead in establishing rest stops along the ten mile long bluff trail, and in his last year on the Board, he advocated that TSRA buy the water company in order to have control over it. It was purchased about a year after he left the Board. During his tenure as TSRA Board Chair, the Board took action to buy the Central TPZ and to establish bike trails throughout TSR, as well as negotiated a deal with SRVI so Sea Ranchers could use one of the golf course tunnels to bike or hike under Hwy. 1. He also did an engineering analysis of the projected water usage at build-out and then calculated the size of the reservoir and developer had to build to get TSR through the summer dry spell, when the water company has to stop pumping from the river. This came out to be 300 acre-feet or 100 million gallons, larger than the developer was planning to build, so they were required to raise the height of the reservoir walls to increase its capacity. |
