Physician-OB/GYN. Rae began her medical career as an officer/physician with the U.S. Health Service,caring for members of the Merchant Marine, Coast Guard and other government employees at a hospital in Seattle. From Seattle, Rae traveled to West Virginia, where she was the physician at the Federal Reformatory for Women in Alderson. Among the infamous inmates under Rae's care were Iva D'Aquino and Mildred Gillars, better known as "Toyko Rose" and "Axis Sally," who were both serving terms for treason. While there, Rae also set up a private practice in a rural area of the state where there were no hospitals. [Note: the following is somewhat inconsistent with some of the information entered under "Education."]: After West Virginia, Rae moved to Michigan where she dd a residency in surgery and ob/gyn at the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State Univ. College of Medicine. She then began a private practice as an ob/gyn in Detroit where she lived for 30 years before her retirement in 1986. During that time, Rae was a Clinical Assistant Professor at Wayne State Univ.and an Earned Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Soon after retiring Rae moved to The Sea Ranch, where she became involved in the community, serving as a TSRA board member from 1992-94 and its Chair from 1993-94. She also served on the Board of Directors of Redwood Coast Medical Services. Rae's hobbies included skiing, golf, hiking, traveling and playing bridge. She was an environmentalist who loved the outdoors and was an avid birder, traveling to many different destinations all over the world to view different species,at least 5,000 of them. "Her life was dedicated to the care of women and children and to the preservation and protection of nature's elements," said her niece, Amy Peters Lawyer of Arlington, Texas. |
